getting over winter bugs

Winter can be magical thanks to the snow and all the fun activities it creates. The downside? Cool weather brings all the cold and flu viruses to the masses. Here are a few tips to help you fight and recover from winter bugs this season!

Dress warm – This one’s kind of a no-brainer, but it pays to wear layers! Make sure you bundle up whether you are inside or out. If you’re staying indoors, make sure to wear socks and an extra sweater or long-sleeve shirt. If you’re outside, don’t forget the hat and gloves! TIP: If your nose is cold, it’s time to add another layer.

Drink fluids – Stock up on water when things get chilly! A hydrated human is a healthy human so make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids. If you seem to have already caught a cold, eat chicken noodle soup! The warm broth is an excellent remedy to the discomfort a cold can bring. It also tastes good so everybody wins!

Wash hands regularly – Viruses spread quickly and you can catch a bug by touching any surface for a matter of seconds. Make sure you wash hands as often as possible! To help you get the most bacteria off your hands, lather up and sing the “happy birthday” song twice.

Get vaccinated – There is no vaccine for a cold as that virus can spread many different ways and symptoms gradually appear. Flu symptoms come on more suddenly and last longer. Increase your chances of immunity by getting a flu shot annually. Head to your local pharmacy for a quick dose!

Stay away from the sick – If you are around someone who is already infected, chances are you’ll become infected, too. Help yourself and those around you by limiting exposure to someone who is already sick. If you are already sick, keep away from crowded public places until your symptoms have subsided.

Exercise – Staying busy and physically fit will help your body fight off any virus that tries to attack. Working out is a great way to help your body stay strong. Have kids? Help them stay healthy by going on regular walks and playing other indoor activities such as basketball, tennis, or dancing.

Stay indoors – While the snow might call to the children, help them have fun inside! Planning indoor activities helps kids stay safe and out of the chilly weather. Designate times during the day for different activities such as painting, crafting, reading, and/or playing games. Snuggle up in the family room and watch a fun movie together as a family!

Know your medicine – It’s a good idea to clean out the medicine cabinet regularly. Check bottles for expiration dates. Also check the quantity to make sure you are a well-stocked. Keep a list in the first aid kit of any medicine allergies you or your loved ones might have. You can also chart what medicines help with what symptoms. Staying organized and informed will help you and your loved ones happy and healthy!

Rest up – If you happen to catch a bug, get plenty of rest. The fatigue will take its toll so don’t fight it! Getting plenty of sleep and rest will help you bounce back faster!
